Year 2 were transported back in time to the Victorian era this week and experienced what school would have been like for Victorian children.
Raglan is a Victorian school so it felt extra special being able to offer the children this experience. Children began the day by having a hand inspection to ensure high levels of personal hygiene were shown.
They then entered the classroom and sat in rows silently for morning register, boys and girls were separated too. The morning session allowed the children to experience chanting arithmetic questions, copying geography learning onto blackboards, practicing Victorian handwriting and learning to recite a poem.
After lunch, the children were taken outside for ‘Drill’ – the equivalent of PE. Children stood in lines and copied different exercises. Once this was over, it was back into the classroom to learn all about Victorian toys, they were even able to make their peg dolls and thaumatropes which they really did enjoy. Overall it was a super day of exciting, immersive learning!
