Communication and Interaction

This area focuses on how your child communicates with others, their relationships and social skills.

A communication and interaction need may include:

  • speech and language difficulties
  • difficulty communicating with others.  For example, not being able to say what they want to, or having difficulties understanding what is being said to them
  • not understanding or using common social rules
  • problems understanding how relationships with other people work
  • autism  (often referred to as ASD)

Children and young people with ASD are likely to have particular difficulties with social interaction. They may also experience difficulties with language, communication and imagination, which can impact on how they relate to others.
